Restless Sea
Restless Sea
Artist: Catherine Widgery

To create a sense of space, light and air that defy the normal experience of underground walkways while referencing in a metaphoric way the essential quality of transition... an absence of boundaries, shifting perceptions, uplifting energy full of possibility. The illusion of space and depth enlivens the experience of moving past the artwork and the viewer’s own reflection amidst the waves and clouds draws us into the experience.

I think for all of us who spend time in airports, they are, by their very nature, stressful experiences. So, certainly my wish with both these two corridors was to have something that connected to nature, transports you to another vibration almost. I wanted there to be a sense that there was space and an opening, almost like a window, something that you could look out through. I decided that I would take images of clouds, which is something that everyone can relate to as a beautiful, quiet experience. We look through the front panels, and there is actually a mirrored etched panel with cloud images at the back. That creates the illusion of twice the depth, and the viewer becomes part of it bit by bit. It changes people's experience of the space. Maybe art can shift our awareness, shift our consciousness a little bit.
